Russian Navy Reinforces Its Presence by Israeli Coast

While the Middle Eastern situation escalates, Russia is resuming the confrontation with Israel and the US in the Mediterranean and Lebanon.
On January 12, the detachment of ships of the Northern Navy led by Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier (accompanied by the Admiral Levchenko missile carrier) entered the Syrian port of Tartus. At the port the ships were met by a group of Russian Navy officers and specialists, who are permanently based there in order to provide for the reconstruction of the port for the reception of modern Russian ships. The neighboring Latakia port is also expecting the arrival of a similar Russian delegation.
DEBKA Agency’s sources report that the arrival of the Russian war ships to Syria, one of the staunchest backers of Hamas, during the military actions between Israel and Hamas is an unprecedented fact.
The fact that Moscow did not delay this trip means it is directly signaling Israel of its disapproval.
It became known in the summer of 2006 that Russian Navy ships located in Sevastopol could be transferred to a Syrian base of Tartus, where works on deepening the seabed are in progress, which would allow to accept any warships of Russia, including the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier.
