Businessman and public figure Yury Kanner has been elected as the new president of the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC), the leading secular Jewish organization in Russia. The election took place at a RJC presidium session in Moscow on May 14.
Over the past two months Kanner served as acting president of the Russian Jewish Congress.
Kanner was born in Zhytomyr region, Ukraine, on May 20, 1955. In 1976, he graduated from the Saratov Economic Institute. He is a candidate of economic sciences.
Kanner is the deputy chairman of the European Jewish Fund (EJF) Board of Governors. He also chairs the Board of Trustees at the Moscow Jewish Religious Community (MJRC), which runs the Moscow Choral Synagogue.
"The mission of the Russian Jewish Congress is to facilitate the formation of a pluralistic Jewish community in Russia, which is proud of its past and firmly stands on the Russian land with its face turned to Jerusalem," Kanner said after being elected as the RJC leader. For the RJC it is crucial to develop programs that will get new people involved into the life of the community, he said. One of the key tasks of the Congress is to form self-governed and self-financed Jewish communities across the whole country, Kanner said.
