German Chancellor Merkel to visit Israel end of February
31.01.2014, Israel and the World German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Israel at the end of February for bilateral talks with the Israeli government, her spokesman announced Friday
German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said earlier this month that Merkel had accepted an invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a visit to Jerusalem. But he didn’t mention dates.
During her visit, February 24-25, Merkel will be accompanied by several cabinet ministers, said spokesman Geog Streiter.
It will be the fifth ‘’government consultations for bilateral cooperation ’’ between Germany since 2008, an arrangement where the two sides meet at regular intervals either in Berlin or in Jerusalem to discuss specific topics.
The last one took place in Berlin in December 2012.
During a visit in the German capital on Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said ‘’we appreciate very much the cooperation between Germany and Israel, we appreciate very much your support to Israel for its security," while his German counterpart Ursula von der Leyen stressed the ‘’special relationship’’ between the two countries.
