                  27.05.2003

A meeting of the directors of the European Council of Jewish Communities (ECJC) was held on the premises of the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC) in Moscow. The chairman of the General Council of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) Joseph Zissels and the EAJC's Executive Director Fedor Osin participated in the work of the meeting. The President of the EAJC Alexander Mashkevich sent the participants his greetings and wished them well via telephone address.
The ECJC regroups Jewish communities and organizations representing the majority of Western and Eastern European countries. Several Russian Jewish organizations, among them the RJC, entered the ECJC in the early 1990s.
The current President of the ECJC is an Italian Kobi Benatof. He represents the ECJC in the Claims Conference, where he protects the interests of CIS Jews and Holocaut survivors, too.
This is the second meeting of the ECJC's Board of Directors held in Russia. The RJC hosted both meetings. This year's event was held on the premises of the Moscow Jewish community's "On the Hill" complex currently under construction.
The two main topics of the meeting that the organizers introduced to the agenda were "The main challenges the Jews of Russia face" and "Current Russia: the geopolitical view".
The Saturday service conducted by the Chief Rabbi of Russia Adolph Shaevich and by the Chief Rabbi of Moscow Pinkhas Goldschmidt was attended by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the State of Israel in Russia, Arkadiy Milman.
The participants finished the meeting by discussing the "Pan-European cooperation: possibilities and chances" topic.
